THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE TIME is Aila Olsen’s hommage to the artistic oeuvre of her mother, which comprises works spanning 40 years.
An interplay of videos, texts, objects, and interventions, THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE TIME forms a multimodal installation that translates Alana’s life (which began as text in a novel by Lance Olsen called Theories of Forgetting) into a three-dimensional reality.
Olsen’s novel, which forms the genesis of this exhibition, is itself based on another piece of art: Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty (1970), a 1,500-feet long Basalt-stone and mud earthwork located in Utah’s Great Salt Lake.
THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE TIME explores entropic processes—both physical and psychological—as forms of beauty.
Lance Olsen, an American Meta-Modernist, is author of twelve novels, one hypermedia text, five nonfiction books, five short-story collections, a poetry chapbook, and two anti-textbooks about experimental writing, as well as editor of two collections of essays about innovative contemporary fiction. His short stories, essays, poems, and reviews have appeared in hundreds of journals, magazines, and anthologies. In 2013 he was a fellow of the American Academy Berlin. Olsen is recipient of many prizes, including a Guggenheim award, Pushcart prize; his novel Tonguing the Zeitgeist was a finalist for the Philip K. Dick Award. Andi Olsen is an American video artist whose works have been shown in film festivals and museums in the U.S. and Europe. She is known for her hybrid works that combine literature, film and, objects. More at www.andiolsen.com. Currently she lives with Lance Olsen in Berlin.
