Artist Bio:
Glenn Underground
Circa 1984, GU aka CVO started out as a DJ under the tutelage of his uncle David Collins in Chicago’s Englewood neighbourhood. He started collecting large amounts of vinyl in the mid 1980’s, from raw Disco to what is now called Rare Grooves & various styles of Chicago House Music.
He is the founding member of the Strictly Jaz Unit and has become one of the most prolific House Music creators of his generation. Glenn was raised on Disco Classics Freeform Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Jazz Funk and Black soul music on Chicago’s South & West Sides (the place where House Music was born). Glenn’s inspiration derives from Chicago’s original pioneers Larry Heard, Ron Hardy, Lil‘ Louis & the late Frankie Knuckles. Glenn has produced music for some of the most respected Deep House Music labels of the past three decades. His releases for Cajual, Prescription, Guidance, KENLOU Records, Vega Records, Shelter Records, Wave Records, Peacefrog and the output of his own SJU label, which he runs with his close brother Boo Williams, have set the standard for sophisticated dance music.
He is one of the few DJ’s who can walk the line between Deep Jazz House, Disco influenced House, and the kind of Classics featured at the legendary parties of late seventies Chicago and continues to this day performing the world over.
Boo Williams
Born in Chicago, Boo Williams has been a part of Chicago’s house music entourage since he first stepped up to the turntables in 1981, influenced heavily by his family who had a big impact on his music career today.
Growing up as a teenager listening to Blues, Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Disco and Jazz Funk, artists like: Roy Ayers, Gill Scott, Heron, Minnie Rippleton, Chaka Khan, Patrick Adams, Leroy Burgess, George Duke, Jeff Lobber, George Clinton, Donald Bird, Ronnie Laws, BB King, Glades Knight, and Etta James, this Inspired Boo in the early 80’s to become a DJ. Participating in events and going to parties listening to Lil Louis, Larry Heard, Robert Owens, Marshall Jefferson, Herb Kent, Ron Hardy, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Steve Silk Hurley, Steve Poindexter, WKKC, and many other great producers and artists from Chicago. Boo quickly became a regular at some of Chicago’s finest spots back then; Mendel High School, Leo High School, The Power House, Medusa, The Humming Bird, Gentle Persuasion, AKA’s, Ascott Hotel, The Bismarck Hotel, and The Congress Hotel, just to name a few.
Later down the line his path would cross with Glenn Underground who became his best friend and spiritual brother. Glenn took Boo in with open arms and showed him how to produce and together they became Strictly Jaz Unit, creating their own unique style of music by making and releasing some of the best music in our scene still to today.
As a DJ and producer Boo is still as in-demand as ever, traveling all over the globe spreading his message and giving great service to the masses. His goal has always been to keep the industry wondering what’s next to come.
