Wie bist du dazu gekommen, das zu tun, was du tust? Wann kam die erste Idee, das Label zu kreieren? / How did you come to do what you do?
Alles begann mit meinem Umzug nach Berlin, ich habe schnell gemerkt, dass es nicht so einfach ist, in Berliner Labels / Kollektive reinzukommen, wenn man noch keinen Namen hat. Daraufhin habe ich mir Gedanken gemacht und beschlossen, mein eigenes Label zu gründen und es anders zu machen als andere und auch Newcomern die Chance zu geben, wenn es mal einen Namen hat. So ist es zuerst zu Volume Berlin Recording gekommen, welches zuerst als Veranstaltungslabel fungierte und welches 2016 gegründet wurde. Als dann 2018 auch schon die ersten Mitglieder mit im Label waren und der erste Release in den Startlöchern stand, haben wir dann gemeinsam beschlossen, den Namen zu ändern. Das hat uns dann einfach besser gefallen und so war VBR geboren.
When did the first idea of creating the label came out? It all started with my move to Berlin, I quickly noticed that it’s not so easy to get into Berlin labels / collectives if you don’t have a name yet, so I thought about it and decided to start my own label and do it differently than others and also give newcomers a chance once it has a name. So it first came to Volume Berlin Recording, which first functioned as an event label and which was founded in 2016. When the first members joined the label in 2018 and the first release was in the starting blocks, we decided together to change the name. We just liked it better and so VBR was born.
Nenne ein paar Statistiken, wann das Label erstellt wurde, wie viele Releases und wie viele Vinyls es gibt und wie viele Pakete/Pakete versendet wurden. / Name some statistics, since the label was created , how many releases, how many vinyls and how many packages/parcels have you made/send?
In der gesamten Laufbahn haben wir bisher über 4,5 Millionen Streams auf Spotify gesammelt und sind aktuell im Hard Techno Bereich auf Platz 31 der weltweiten Techno Beatport Labels im Peak Time unter den Top 200. Der erste Release kam Anfang 2018 heraus, mittlerweile sind über 100 Releases erschienen. Darunter Singles, 5 Compilations, mehrere Alben. Es sind über 400 Tracks unter Vertrag. Vinyl unter VBR haben wir leider noch nicht, haben wir aber noch vor.
In the whole career we have collected over 4.5 million streams on Spotify so far and are currently ranked 31st in the Worldwide Techno Beatport Labels in Peak Time in the top 200. The first release came out at the beginning of 2018, meanwhile over 100 releases have been released, including singles, 5 compilations, several albums. There are over 400 tracks under contract. Unfortunately we don’t have vinyl under
VBR yet, but we plan to.

Auf welche Veröffentlichung bist du am meisten stolz? / What is the release of which you are most proud of?
Das ist eine schwierige Frage, eigentlich bin ich auf jeden Release auf dem Label stolz und freue mich über jeden Künstler, der uns das Vertrauen gibt, mit uns zusammenzuarbeiten. Ob Newcomer oder namhafte Künstler, jeder Release ist auf einer Art besonders.
That’s a difficult question, actually I’m proud of every release on the label and I’m happy about every artist who gives us the trust to work together with us – whether newcomer or well-known artist – every release is special in some way.
Kannst du beschreiben, was ein typischer Büroalltag für dich bedeutet? / Can you describe to us what a typical day at the office means to you?
Aufstehen, frühstücken, nebenbei E-Mails checken, die ersten Telefonate führen, neue Demos anhören, Cover & Masterings in Auftrag geben, Releases anlegen. Rechnungen überweisen, manchmal auch Hotels buchen und Verträge unterzeichnen für unsere bevorstehenden Veranstaltungen, Line-ups und Time Tables planen, das ein oder andere Meeting und dann geht es meist an eigene Produktionen im Home Studio.
Getting up, having breakfast, checking emails, making the first phone calls, listening to new demos, commissioning covers and masterings, creating releases. Transferring invoices, sometimes booking hotels and signing contracts for our upcoming events, planning line ups and time tables, the odd meeting and then it’s usually off to our own productions in the home studio.
Wer macht mit? Produzierst du selbst auch oder bist DJ? / Who’s in your Team? Are you a Music Producer or DJ?
Mittlerweile habe ich ein großes Team hinter mir, das mich bei der Labelarbeit unterstützt. Es fühlt sich an wie eine große Familie, ohne mein Team wären wir nie an diesen Standpunkt gekommen, an dem wir heute sind. Mit dabei sind beispielsweise unser Grafiker Leo von Varius Leo Design, unser Mastering Engineer Oliver Immer, Timo, auch bekannt als Dirty Harry Dj, mit dem ich gemeinsam unsere Projekte und Events plane , Lukas und Robbie die sich um unsere Verlagssachen kümmern und natürlich unsere Künstler selbst, wovon einige auch freiwillig Aufgaben übernehmen und sich einbringen. Ich selber bin auch DJ und Produzent. Ich spiele und produziere unter meinem bürgerlichen Namen Felix Reichelt. Ich bin meist jedes Wochenende in verschiedenen Clubs in Deutschland, aber auch das ein oder andere Mal international unterwegs. Es ist viel Arbeit, alles unter einen Hut zu bekommen, aber auf einer Art und Weise brauche ich das auch. Ich liebe Herausforderungen.
In the meantime I have a big team behind me that supports me in the label work. It feels like a big family, without my team we would never have come to this point where we are today. For example, our graphic designer Leo from Varius Leo Design, our mastering engineer Oliver Immer, Timo, also known as Dirty Harry Dj, with whom I plan our projects and events together, Lukas and Robbie who take care of our publishing stuff and of course our artists themselves, some of whom also volunteer to take on tasks and get involved. I myself am also a DJ and producer. I play and produce under my real name Felix Reichelt. I am usually every weekend in different clubs in Germany, but also the one or other time internationally on the road. It’s a lot of work to get everything under one hat, but in a way I need it. I love challenges.
Welche Vertriebswege nutzt du? / Which distribution channels do you use?
Wir arbeiten mit Dig dis Zusammen, waren vorher bei Symphonic Distribution, da der Vertrieb aber in den USA saß, habe ich alles nach Deutschland geholt wegen der Rechtsgrundlage.
We work together with Dig dis were previously with Symphonic Distribution, but since the distribution was in the USA, I brought everything to Germany because of the legal basis.
Wie stark nutzt du YouTube und was hat es gebracht? / Did you use youtube and how strong/weak the impact?
Wir haben einen YouTube-Kanal, der muss aber mal wieder gepflegt werden. Ab und zu laden wir Videos von Partys hoch oder das ein oder andere Interview zu einem Release. Es besteht da starker Nachholbedarf, aber wir sind dran. Wir arbeiten aber auch mit YouTube-Kanälen zusammen wie Fingr86, der das ein oder andere Video von uns auf seinem Kanal veröffentlicht.
We have a youtube channel, but it needs to be updated, from time to time we upload videos of parties or the one or other interview regarding our release, there is a lot of catching up to do, but we are working on it. But we also work together with youtub channels like Fingr86 who publishes the one or other video of us on his channel.
Schon mal bei klickzahlen auf Soundcloud nachgeholfen? / Have you ever helped yourself with buying clicks & plays on soundcloud?
Nein, sowas machen wir grundsätzlich nicht.
No, we don’t do that as a matter of principle.
Wo findest du junge, hungrige und ambitionierte Artists? / Where do you find young, hungry and ambitious artists?
In den Anfangsjahren viel über Soundcloud und Veranstaltungen, auf welchen man selbst mal gespielt hat. Mittlerweile finden die Künstler uns. Wir bekommen viele Demos geschickt über unsere Homepage oder über unsere Künstler, die schon unter Vertrag sind. Da kommt auch die ein oder andere Empfehlung. Es fehlt meist auch die Zeit, selber nach neuen Leuten zu suchen, aber irgendwie funktioniert es doch.
In the early years, a lot via Soundcloud, and events where we played ourselves. In the meantime, the artists find us, we get a lot of demos sent to us via our homepage or via our artists who are already under contract, we also get the one or other recommendation, we usually don’t have the time to look for new people ourselves, but somehow it works.
Welche Auswirkungen hat das Streaming mit Spotify auf die wirtschaftliche Situation eines Indie-Labels? / What impact does streaming with spotify have on the economic situation of an indie label?
Schwierige Frage, Spotify hat heutzutage natürlich einen großen Einfluss auf die Musikbranche und dadurch verkauft sich Musik natürlich auch schlechter, aber ich bin der Meinung, wer sich einen Track kaufen möchte, der tut dies sowieso, um die Arbeit des Künstlers zu würdigen und zum Glück gibt es ja auch Ausschüttungen durch Streams.
Difficult question Spotify has a big influence on the music industry these days, of course, and as a result music sells less, but I’m of the opinion that anyone who wants to buy a track does so anyway to appreciate the artist’s work and fortunately there are also distributions through streams.
Wenn du nach neuer Musik suchst, was sind Schlüsselelemente und Faktoren, nach denen du suchst, abgesehen davon, dass es offensichtlich ein großartiger Track ist? / When you’re looking for new music, what are key elements and factors you look for, apart from it obviously being a great track?
Der Track muss das gewisse Extra haben und herausstechen, das Mixdown ist natürlich auch entscheidend. Setzt sich ein Track im Club durch oder nicht? Das ist die Frage, die ich mir dann immer stelle. Wie würde ich im Club darauf reagieren, holt der Track mich ab oder hole ich mir lieber was zu trinken? Ich achte sehr auf Kick und Bass und das Zusammenspiel der restlichen Elemente, die einen Technotrack ausmachen.
The track has to have that certain something extra and stand out, the mixdown is of course also decisive, does a track catch on in the club or not, that’s the question I always ask myself: how would I react to it in the club, does the track pick me up or would I rather get something to drink? I pay a lot of attention to kick, bass and the interplay of the other elements that make up a techno track.
Wie würdest du den Stil und die Vision des Labels beschreiben? / How would you describe the style and vision of your Label?
Die Idee hinter Volume Berlin war schon immer Techno Music for everybody. Bei uns findet jeder, der Techno mag, das Richtige für sich. Von zart bis hart ist bei uns für jeden was dabei. Wir bewegen uns im Genre: Techno / Hard Techno / Industrial / Melodic Techno / Acid Techno, aber auch Minimal Techno & Tech House.
The idea behind Volume Berlin has always been techno music for every body – everyone who likes techno will find the right thing for them. From soft to hard, we have something for everyone – we move in the genre: techno / hard techno / industrial / melodic techno / acid techno as well as minimal techno & tech house.
Welche Websites oder Apps nutzt du, um neue Titel zu hören/zu finden? / What are some sites or apps that you use to listen/ find new tracks?
Wenn ich Tracks für meine Sets suche, schaue ich meistens bei Beatport oder greife auf meine eigenen Tracks oder Titel vom Label zurück.
When I’m looking for tracks for my sets, I usually check Beatport or use my own tracks or tracks from the label.
Welche Tipps würdest du Produzenten geben, die ihre Demos per E-Mail einsenden, damit sie ihre Tracks professionell an dich schicken können?
Bitte nehmt euch etwas Zeit bei den E-Mails. Es verlangt ja keiner eure komplette Lebensgeschichte, aber 2 Sätze zu euch wäre schon schön. Des Weiteren, wenn ihr Tracks schickt, die ihr zum Download freigebt, dann macht euch bitte die Mühe und schreibt euren Artist-Namen und den Titel dazu. Ihr seid nicht die Einzigen, die Tracks schicken und im schlimmsten Fall kann man diese dann nicht mehr zuordnen. Mein Tipp an alle Produzenten da draußen.
For producers out there sending in their demos via emails, what are some tips you would give them on professionally sending in their track to you? Please take some time with your emails. No one is asking for your complete life story, but 2 sentences about you would be nice. Furthermore, if you send tracks, then please, if you already release them for download, at least make the effort and write your artist name and the title to it, you are not the only one who sends tracks and in the worst case, you can no longer assign them, my tip to all producers out there
