Both Chicago-style pizza and Chicago-style house music are deep and delicious, and this is fresh out of the furnace. This iconic sound is exactly what’s celebrated on the fifth release of Deeper Groove Recordings as the label once again enlists Cork-based talent Southbound Sounds for their new EP, ‘Whiplash’.
Lead track ‘Whiplash’ swirls and rotates around the listener with phased claps, hats and clean percussion, softened by a frenzy of warm organ stabs. These are paired with an incessant, distant vocal sample, and before you know it, the groove has you moving. Glenn Davis’ stunning remix of this later in the EP takes the keys to another level with a cool drum break and subtle, bumping bassline.
‘Vortex’ is a joyous house number from the Southbound Sounds boys. Again revolving around a smattering of organ stabs, it feels classy and effortless. Highly danceable stuff.
The final track on the EP, ‘Beacon’, winds things down in a completely unique way. Almost Balearic in style, it features a straining violin string, dubby vocals and synths that delay into the sunset. It really is a dusky tune – perfect for bringing a dancefloor to a unifying close.
