Can you tell us a bit about your journey as a DJ and producer? How did you get started in electronic music?
I’ve been writing songs and playing in indie rock bands since I was a 13 year old growing up in the desert of the Coachella Valley, and fell in love with producing music at 16, when I started releasing music on Myspace and realized I could be the whole band from the comfort of my bedroom. Making music has always just been my spiritual outlet, and channel of connection to both friends and myself. I was into everything from Radiohead to Aphex Twin, Deadmau5, and Four Tet to DJ Shadow and J. Dilla by that time, and my natural inclination was to try and emulate a little bit of everything. I moved to LA at 18 in 2009, right when the EDM and rave scenes were taking over in the US, and I was so blown away by the love, insanity, and flow states in which I found myself immersed at warehouses, clubs, and festivals.
The genre ‘Healing House’ you have brought to listeners worldwide, could you tell us more about the message you’re looking to share? What first led you to explore this?
Healing House was a crystallization of all the different parts of my identity and life experience. At its core, it is an exploration of the healing power of frequency and intent fused with dance music. I have been a dedicated meditator for many years (specifically Vipassana meditation), and a student of both ancient and modern sound healing under the guidance of my mentor, Jonathan Goldman, a master healer, musician, and pioneer of sound healing in the West since the ‘70s. Synchronicity led me to his teachings during a period at which I reached an emotional, personal, and creative “rock bottom” in my life, which looked like depression, self-destructive behaviors, and loss of connection to myself and my music. Integrating sound healing and energy medicine (practices such as Solfeggio frequencies, mantras, pranayama/breathwork, and qi gong) into my life not only saved me, but helped me make a quantum shift into my higher self – a version of me connected to the simple joy of Being through service to others. In much the same way, house music has had a similar effect on me at different times in my life. At a certain point in my healing journey, I realized it was my path to bring these two worlds together; to help open that door for others as it had been opened for me, and to Play my part in awakening people to the God-given power of healing within us all. When we realize our aligned, loving presence is the ultimate medicine, everything changes.
How would you describe your sound and artistic vision? Has it evolved over time?
I aim to be a bridge and explorer of the ancient and modern. Of the therapeutic and the ecstatic. All over the world, across time and space, humans have understood that sound and movement were essential tools that connected us to the Earth, each other, and ourselves, and that music is medicine. It doesn’t have to look or sound any one way–it’s about the presence and intention behind it. I hope I never fully recognize myself along the path…because the joy and power will only grow as the sound merges with the sounds of the whole world.
How do you balance creating music that’s both spiritually uplifting and club-friendly?
Alan Watts said “Man suffers only because he takes seriously what the gods made for fun.” For me, it’s about taking the process seriously, but not myself. I try to cultivate an inner space that allows the creative spirit and the truth to flow through me in whatever form that takes. I wait for life to speak to me, and do my best to get out of the way. Being in the moment and operating from a place of gratitude and appreciation for the beauty around me always seems to end up with the music pouring out of me in a way that feels effortless. When I find techniques, specific frequencies, mantras, etc that have a healing effect on me, my instinct is to share it through my own creativity in a way I feel will best serve others.
What was the creative process like when working on your latest single ‘Quema Quema?
Getting to travel this year and play incredible shows has definitely inspired me as I’ve noticed what reacts in different environments, and so when the vocal sample of Quema Quema found me, I immediately resonated and got to work. For me, it activated the inner fire of my heart, and so I decided to tune it to a perfect fifth below 528hz, a solfeggio frequency known as the “miracle tone.” 528hz music has been shown in studies to extend cell life, increase oxytocin (the “love hormone”), and decrease cortisol (the “stress hormone”). This perfect fifth ratio is naturally found throughout the design of nature and is extremely harmonically stable, which our bodies and brains naturally pick up on, balancing our nervous system in the process. I found the creative polarity of a hype club banger that had this effect to be super inspiring, and I’ve been so honored by my Healing House family’s resonance with it.
What are your musical influences from childhood?
I loved The Strokes, Bob Marley, The Grateful Dead, Marvin Gaye/all things Motown, but also always really dug euro trance anything you’d find on the original Now! That’s What I Call Music pop compilations. My mom put me on to 80s synth pop stuff like Soft Cell and Culture Club and also Santana, and my dad was always playing everything from Stevie Wonder to The Eagles. So it was all things melodic and soulful. But really, I always loved everything.
Your recent releases have resonated deeply with fans. What feedback have you received from listeners about the impact of Healing House on their lives?
It has been so deeply humbling and awe-inspiring to receive messages from the community. People have told me the music has helped them find inner strength in their journeys healing from cancer and other illnesses, processing the loss of loved ones, leaving toxic relationships, betting on themselves and following their passions, and even helping alleviate physical pain and sickness. It’s truly been mind-blowing, because while these practices have done miraculous things in my own life, I always say I am an explorer and adventurer on this journey as much as anyone else…I am constantly learning from this incredible community as I go.
Where has been particularly memorable for touring in your live shows, and where else would you be excited to perform?
We just did a sold-out headline show in my hometown of LA, where everyone was singing and chanting along to all the songs with me. It was incredibly beautiful and special being together in that way. Really, every show this year has been uniquely ecstatic and divine. I am so grateful. It’s truly the honor of a lifetime to be with everyone across the world.
What’s next for you in 2025? Any upcoming releases or shows we should be excited about?
